The Tiberias International Rowing Marathon is becoming a tradition
One day following the running marathon that will take place next month, the focus of attention will shift to the waters of the Sea of Galilee where the rowing competition will take place. World champion, German Marcel Hacker will arrive.
The National Rowing Union and the members of the Tiberias Rowing Club are beginning to create tradition and next month they will run the second international rowing marathon in the Sea of Galilee. Some of Israel's best rowers along with the German national team will be rowing in the competition. The German team will also take advantage of the wonderful Israeli weather in order to train for a whole week in the lake.
The rowing marathon will take place on January 7th, a day following the 34th International Tiberia Marathon. The competition is sponsored by the Tiberias Hotel Association and the Tiberias municipality. The competition was held first last year and due to its success, it was decided to continue and create a new tradition. Of the prominent rowers that secured their participation is Marcel Hacker, the German rower who won a bronze medal in the Sydney Olympic Games. In 2002 he became the world champion and in 2003 and 2006 he won second place. In 2009 he won the bronze medal at the world championship in rowing.
The Rowing Marathon participants will begin at the southern point of the Tiberias Alon promenade on a 6 km route to the Hot Water Spring (Hamei Tveria) and back. Spectators and interested crowds will be able to watch the competition from the shore. The participants will be partially rowing in a beach rowing style which is the extreme sport aspect of rowing. This is a style which is becoming more and more popular in recent years in the world.
Yaacov Darmon, Chairperson of the Tiberias Rowing Club and Councilman Eitan Oved, an active rower in the Tiberias Rowing Club, are the forces behind the initiative to bring the competition to Tibrerias: "The Rowing Marathon is a means for turning Tiberias in to a center for rowers from all over the world. We have excellent weather conditions that are impossible to find in Europe in this time of the year. I believe that through events such as this we can bring more and more national teams from the world. In future, I believe, we will host many major international events".
